New Learner Guide

Everything you need to know as a new driver starting your journey

Getting Your Licence

Learner's Permit

Apply online at Service NSW. You'll need to pass a written knowledge test on road rules and signs.

Display Your L Plates

Once you have your learner's licence, you must display L plates on the front and back of the vehicle.

Log Your Driving Hours

You need to log a minimum of 120 hours, including 20 hours at night.

Driving Test

Take your practical driving test at Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

What to Bring to Your Lessons

Learner's licence or passport
Comfortable shoes
Water bottle (essential in summer)
Logbook (if you have one)

Tips for New Learners

  • ✓Don't be nervous - we start slow and build up your confidence
  • ✓Consistent weekly lessons give the best progress
  • ✓When practising with family, a Supervising Driver must be present
  • ✓Driving should be enjoyable - focus on having fun!
