Understanding Australian Speed Limits

Speed limits in Australia can be confusing. This guide covers NSW limits so you'll always know what speed to drive.

Default Speed Limits in NSW

50

Built-up Areas (Default)

Roads with houses, shops, or buildings close to the road. Look for lamp posts - if they're spaced regularly, it's likely 50km/h.

100

Open Roads (Default)

Roads outside built-up areas without posted signs.

Speed Limits You'll See in Sydney

40 km/h - School Zones

Active on school days only, typically 8-9:30am and 2:30-4pm. Watch for flashing lights near schools.

️ 50 km/h - Urban Roads

The default limit in residential and commercial areas with pedestrian activity.

️ 60-80 km/h - Arterial Roads

Major roads like Parramatta Road, King Georges Road. These vary based on conditions.

️ 100-110 km/h - Motorways

M1 Pacific Motorway, M4, M5. 110km/h on newer motorways, 100km/h on older sections.

Speed Limit Signs - What They Mean

Red Circle = Maximum Speed

You must NOT drive faster than this speed.

The number inside the red circle is the maximum speed limit.

School Zone Speed Limits

School Zones: 40 km/h

Look for:

  • • Yellow "School Zone" signs
  • • Flashing amber lights (when active)
  • • Children's crossing flags

Usually active 8:00-9:30am and 2:30-4:00pm on school days

Variable Speed Limits

Some roads have changing limits shown on electronic signs:

  • Road work zones - May change throughout the day
  • Tunnel restrictions - Lower limits for safety
  • Weather conditions - Reduced speeds in rain

Always obey the speed shown on the electronic sign, even if it differs from the permanent sign.
